With spring sports in full swing we thought it would be a good idea to take a closer look at some of the headline makers in 2016. Here are athletes in golf, slow pitch softball and soccer we think you should know.
GOLF
Jeff Whitson – Moore
This two-time state qualifier shot his way to a top 20 finish in the Class 6A state tournament last year and should see a significant improvement on that score in 2016. Whitson carries a 4.0 GPA and has signed with the University of Arkansas-Monticello to continue his playing career in college.
Rachel Campbell – Westmoore
She’s not the No.1 bag at Westmoore, but she is tough, focused and improving. Not just a little, but a lot. Campbell worked hard in the off-season and shaved 15 strokes off her average heading into the 2016 season. Only a junior, Campbell will certainly make state again and show how her hard work has paid off.
SLOWPITCH
Emily Richardson – Southmoore
A hard-swinging infielder, Richardson is known for putting the ball in play and hitting for average. Her .524 with five homeruns, 10 doubles and 42 RBI’s is impressive for anyone who knows anything about softball. The senior is a 4.0 GPA student and a three-year starter for the Lady Cats.
Carlee Geissler – Moore
Probably not the first player that comes to mind on the Moore slowpitch team with all of that talent, but Geissler is certainly right there and carries the hearts of all the fans with her. Last year she suffered multiple leg issues, but worked extremely hard to get her mind and body back in playing condition. Catch the junior in the circle for Lady Lions.
Lindsey Stoeckel – Southmoore
Versatile is one way to describe Stoeckel. Head coach Jason Lingo said, “Lindsey can play anywhere on the field.” This three-year starter has committed to Oklahoma State University after a sophomore season of hitting .590 with 34 RBI’s.
SOCCER
Ashley Webster – Southmoore
Sophomore forward Ashley Webster is getting it done on the pitch and in the classroom. Currently ranked No.2 in her class Webster carries a 4.7 GPA and is taking all pre-AP courses. She’s also a member of the Southmoore band, the Dukes Tip program and plays soccer for the Southlakes Cosmos 2000 blue team. Yes, she a good soccer player as well.
Allie Gordon – Westmoore
Primarilly a defender, Allie Gordon recorded three goals and three assists last year. A three-year varsity starter, Gordon has worked her way into an offer to play at the next level. The senior will take her talents to the University of Science and Arts Oklahoma in the fall.
